How to apply a lip & cheek tint: from college to a wedding
A step-by-step guide to applying a liquid tint on lips and cheeks without streaks, building one to three layers, and making it last through a long day or a dholki.
The short version
- Cheeks: dot on the apples, blend up toward your temples quickly, before it sets.
- Lips: balm and blot first, a dot in the centre, press and tap outward.
- Layers: one for daytime, two for a fresh flush, three for evenings. Let each layer settle before the next.
- Liquid tint goes on after foundation and before any powder.
Before you start
- Moisturise. MasterClass notes that liquid blush suits dry skin best when it's moisturised first. Give your moisturiser a minute to sink in.
- Prep your lips. A thin layer of balm, then blot with a tissue. If your lips are flaky, Faces Canada suggests a very gentle buff before balm; if they're cracked, skip the buff and just balm.
- Start small. A tint is easier to build up than to take back. Start with less than you think.
Cheeks, step by step
- Find the apples of your cheeks. Smile in the mirror; the round part that lifts is where colour looks most natural. Charlotte Tilbury's guide also says to keep it away from the sides of your nose.
- Dot. One small dot on each cheek is enough for the first layer.
- Blend fast, upward. BEAUTY/crew's advice is to blend "very quickly" up toward the temples, before the tint dries. Use your fingertips in small pressing circles, or a damp sponge if your skin is dry.
- Check in daylight. Blush looks stronger outdoors than in a bathroom mirror, so stop when it looks slightly too soft indoors.
If you wear foundation: put it on first, then the cheek tint, then any powder. MasterClass warns that putting a liquid on top of powder can cause streaks.
Lips, step by step
- Dot the centre. One small drop in the middle of your lower lip.
- Press. Press your lips together gently to share the colour with your top lip.
- Tap outward. Use your ring finger, which presses most lightly, to tap the colour toward the corners. Charlotte Tilbury recommends building in thin coats this way for a soft, blurred edge.
- Clean the edges with a cotton bud if needed.
One, two or three layers
Charlotte Tilbury describes liquid blush the same way: one dot for a soft day look, two for rosy, three for bold. A buildable tint works the same way. Let each layer settle for about a minute before adding the next, so it doesn't lift the one underneath.
| Layers | Looks like | When |
|---|---|---|
| 1 layer | A natural flush, as if you just came in from a walk | College, office, daytime, no-makeup days |
| 2 layers | Clearly tinted, fresh and healthy | Lunch out, family visits, photos in daylight |
| 3 layers | Bold, evening colour | Dinners, dholki, mehndi, weddings |
Nykaa's guide makes a useful point for daytime: daylight makes colour look stronger, so one layer is usually enough before sunset.
For a dholki, mehndi or wedding
We couldn't find expert guidance written specifically for Pakistani functions, so these are general tips from wedding-guest makeup guides:
- Build to three layers on lips, letting each one settle. Add a clear gloss on top if you want shine.
- Match your cheeks and lips with the same shade for a put-together look that doesn't clash with a bright outfit.
- Set the rest of your face. Maybelline India suggests a primer, long-wear base and setting spray for long events, and carrying powder for touch-ups.
- Check under flash. Take a quick flash photo before you leave: flash shows colours, and any mismatched base, more harshly than a mirror.
- Carry the bottle. A tint is easy to top up in the middle of the lips after eating, with no mirror-perfect lining needed.
Making it last
- Blot lightly with a tissue after the final layer.
- Top up the centre of your lips after meals rather than reapplying all over.
- In humid weather, Nykaa's guide notes that a soft matte finish holds better, so a light dusting of translucent powder over cheek tint can help.
Common mistakes
- Too much at once. Start with a dot; add more after it settles.
- Blending too slowly. Tint starts to set quickly on cheeks. Work one cheek at a time.
- Applying over powder. Liquid over powder can look patchy.
- Skipping balm in winter. Tint shows every dry flake. Balm first, blot, then colour.
